I had one girl give me and the other two leaders a gift one year and I was also very surprised and thought it was very sweet. I always appreciate the gesture. Sometimes, however, it becomes more of an obligation than truly from the heart. That's what I'm trying to avoid.
The only gifts I got from non-close folks is some chocolate from a semi-co-worker (yum!) and some chocolate from a professor (yum!) and some homemade earrings from a post-doc that I've helped. The earrings were great!
I won't return or regift anything ... I rarely, if ever, do.
Our office does a little gift exchange, but there are just six of us and we do a Dirty Santa style thing.
We all bring goodies and treats for the weeks leading up to Christmas, but no one goes out and buys for everyone else.
I want to change directions slightly. What do you all think of those dirty santa type exchanges? I've been doing these type of things for many years and it's getting a little old. So many that I've been to contain gag gifts or white elephant gifts and I'm just getting tired of them. Sometimes they can be nice I think. A few people mentioned getting homemade goodies, which is nice, or an ornament for the tree, which I also like.
DHs boss has been doing this for a few years. The party has grown in size to the point that it took over two hours is year. After about 45 minutes I was done. No one had time to talk because the whole party was spent with people "stealing" gifts from others.
That's it. We called it white elephant too, but I've heard dirty Santa recently and saw someone else use it in this thread. Most of the ones I've been to are more along the junk experience you describe. At the monster two hour one, there were a couple of nice bottles of bourbon and wine, but the rest was pretty much junk.

My DH wants to start a tradition in our family that is a variation on the white elephant game.
