I was thinking about this yesterday, about makeup, personal care, etc. I started mentally tallying how much time, energy and money I put into my personal appearance. I consider myself fairly *low maintenance* but was surprised, when calculated on a yearly level, how much time and money I put into myself.

So on the average, how much time, energy and money do you spend on yourself? Including not just makeup, but hair care, fitness, clothing, cleansers and styling products, etc.

I'll post mine in a bit.

Way more than I used to, since I highlight my hair several times a year now at $95 a pop.

That's so funny. I was reading this magazine the other day where they tallied up just what you asked for for this one gal (can't remember who now. The mag's home.) and they had this column next to hers for the "reader" to write down hers.

Not much. I only wear lipstick. No gym memberships, hardly ever get my hair cut....I've had two babies back to back so I have very few clothes because I don't want to buy stuff when I'm still in a "transitional" size. My DH says I should spend more but whenever I have extra I spend it on the kids ;)

Okay, in figuring it all up, I spend somewhere around $1500-2000 a year. The two most expensive would be getting my hair professionally cut and highlighted and my gym membership.

Time and energy, I spend about 6-7 hrs a week working out-be it at the gym or at home. Getting a highlight takes about 3 hrs, but I only get it done about 3x a year (sometimes 4). Getting ready in general takes me about 30-40 minutes each day-that means makeup and drying/styling hair. I also try to get a 1 hr massage at least a couple times a year. I take time out to read and relax too-a few hours to myself a week if I can get it (sometimes thats just a soak in the tub at 11p when everyone else is asleep).

I do admit, I feel better when I look good. And I think that taking care of myself and even pampering myself is important to my family, because it makes ME an easier person to be around overall, lol.

Wow thats a great deal on a gym membership!! I really had to think about it before I got one, mainly because I just dont use it in the summer months. But when its -20F outside, it is nice to have, lol. Plus I like mixing some weight training in with my running. Mine is about $50 a month, and I think I use it enough (2-3 times a week or more) to justify it.

I'm going to be very spoiled because DH just got a BowFlex for weight training at home.

I probably spend less in 5-10 years on all that gunk than many (most? the average?) women do in a year.

I take less than 30 min each morn to shower, shave, do hair and makeup and get dressed. Most mornings its like 20 min. On a "date night" or other special occasion, it might be 45.

I get my hair permed every 2 years or so. Cut every 9 mo or so. I've had it colored twice. Both in the last 2 years.

Just curious, from the *tone* of your post, am I right in assuming you are somewhat disdainful of someone spending time and money on themselves? Or was it intended more tongue in cheek? If the first is correct, why do you think that?

I think your $1500-2000 estimate is way low. Your gym membership alone is $600. Add in the couple of massageas and you're up to $1000 already. Add the 4x a year highlights/coloring and you're at what $1250? That's not including haircuts, manicures?, makeup, hairspray, shampoo, conditioner, lotions, etc, etc, etc ....
