Do you answer the door if there is someone at your door whom you don't know?

Just now, my doorbell rang.

This is one of the benefits of living on the 3rd floor of an apartment building - hardly anyone comes to our door. LOL. Everywhere else I have lived, I openned the door and talked through the screen, or just talked through the screen if the door was already open. I never buy anything from the door to door sales people though and I have been known to give the religious fanatics a piece of my mind.

I'll open the door most of the time. But it's usually to tell them "no" to whatever cause they're selling. I can spot a PIRGer even without seeing their ID. Their is an unmistakable idealistic college kid look.

I'm generally not scared of them since I live in a neighborhood of privacy-free two-family homes where any forced entry would likely be witnessed. One exception was a day when nobody was around and two guys came to the door claiming to be Mormons. Perhaps they were, but something about TWO guys, rather than one, didn't sit well with me and I just yelled at them through the door.

I usually answer. Depends on what the person looks like to be honest. If I think I could take them, I answer. If not...I trust my gut.

We usually get kids/teens selling stuff door-to-door more than anything else.

Actually, the Mormons DO travel in packs. I dated a devout Mormon in hs/college (you all can pick your chins up off the floor now) and when they're on their mission, they always travel in groups of two. Of course, if they really were LDS, they would have had their identifing name tags on and would have been dressed uber-conservatively (navy slacks & white button down shirt).

If dh or ds1 are home, they will peek out to see who it is, and maybe open the door, but i very often completely ignore the doorbell *and* the phone for that matter. my philosophy is, i *do not* have to answer the door or phone, if i dont want to. sometimes, i just cant be bothered, just sat down, whatever. i do however, always buy from little kids selling fundraisers for school. i dont buy from the college kids, as that stuff is usually high priced items. if its dark out, and my doorbell rings, we dont answer it at all. if its someone we know, they can call. oh, we do have caller id too, though.

Here is my Mormon story:

It was snowing outside and freezing last November. Devin was still able to walk but had to use a cane. Two girls came to the door...they were really cute. Elizabeth Smart cute and they were Mormons. They do their general speech and Devin screams. "We aren't interested!" and slams the door. Very un-Devin.

He turned to me and said, "How did they know I was dying?"

I said, "They didn't. They're Mormons. They go door to door."

Devin: "Oh no! They were really cute and I slammed the door in their face. We could have asked them in!"

The look on his face was priceless. I laughed all day.

"I do not want to be a princess! I want to be myself"

Mine was cute, too. But it just wasn't going to work, KWIM? I actually stopped dating him when I met DH. DH is still incredulous that I dated a Mormon, but then again, he gets them confused w/the Amish. ;)

(I'm not kidding...)

We have a security gate on our home so this doesnt happen anymore. We are however, moving to a home without a security gate. I won't be answering the door if I'm home without DH unless I know the person.

We don't get the LDS here, we get the Jehovah's Wintesses!
