bad mommy and daddy report tonight..we were channel surfing and dh decides to announce that we're going to watch the abc movie sixth sense. i'm saying no way and the oldest two, ages 6 and almost 8, are all for it because it's *scaaaaaary*. at every commercial i'm saying it's just make believe it's just make believe and even encouraged a channel change. we watched the entire movie and when it was time to go to bed, my oldest asked a genuine question: what do you do if (big emphasis on *if*) things pop out of the television mom? i reminded her that it was only a movie and that would never happen. she was certain i was wrong and kept asking "but what *if*...." i said it wouldn't happen and included other shows that wouldn't pop out either like her favorites spongebob and lizzie mcguire.

i feel so bad that these kids watched this movie. are there limits on programming at your home and would you have handled the scenario the same way with children at this age? tia for any btdt or advice.

m3t who can't wait til the school year starts so we can get back into a routine of 8P bedtime.

p.s. i will go as far as to include a woman who has chosen an abortion as this population as well. her wrong is not what the church accepts but rather herself, her belief in the forgiveness of sins is what carries her thru..too many times thou, one would rather consider her choice permitable and the church something terrible and derogatory (i.e. church rheutoric revisited).

Sidebar ...

In high school, I had frequented a local church (not my home church ... a friend's church ... her father was youth pastor) and after one particular visit, I vowed not to go back. A young man (the cousin of a friend of mine) had recently moved in with his grandparents, who attended that church. In order for him to be considered a "member" of that church, they actually *voted* him in. I was appalled when I found out that if the congregation voted "no", that he wouldn't be allowed to worship there.

But it is not specific to the Catholic Church.

I had a friend that moved to Vermont and was astounded at the UMC church there. It was too liberal even for her. They had a man attending the UMC circle (women social groups) that was in a committed relationship with another man. It made her very uncomfortable.

While I would like to say a homosexual couple would be made welcome in our church, I imagine it would not be blanket acceptance and there would be a whole lot of whispering. If one of them tried to go to a Circle meeting, there would be even more whispering.

Catholics certainly are not the only Christians that discriminate. I know you know that but I felt like writing it anyway. I have mentioned my cousin is a Methodist minister. He is divorced. My sister thinks he should not be allowed to be a minister. He has sinned. In some different denominations, he would not be allowed to serve.

I think there is a fine line in talking about the pedophilia scandal and bashing the Catholic religion. They have issues but all organized groups have issues.

Nope. You must be an member of the Catholic faith to partake in the Eucharist (communion). I attended quite reqularly with xh in the early days of our relationship/marriage and was never allowed because I didn't "convert". I wasn't worthy, I guess.

really? i happen to find that very admirable......it's like a b/f or sahm support group. a group of individuals who can bond and find mutual comaraderie.

sorry you feel that way..my dh is presbyterian and attends my church every single sunday. instead of feeling selfish and unworthy....he looks at my church as something of great tradition and respect.

I have never quite understood the theory of excommuncation from a church.

I disagree. They don't drift from their faith, but from their denomination or their parish/congregation.

And they don't drift because their lifestyle is wrong or immoral. They move to a different expression of their faith because their original method (the church they are "drifting" from) won't accept them fully or is in conflict with their own beliefs/values.

Most of the people I know that have "drifted" from their church haven't lost their spirituality or their relationship with God ... just chosen a different venue in which to express it.

She said she guessed she was 'unworthy'. . .she didn't mention 'selfish' at all.

Interesting topic here in my town....the new archbishop has gone on record during the election as stating that those politicians who vote against the church (ie pro-choice) may not take communion.
