Our weird house painter--need advice

Last summer, we hired a guy to paint our house. He was in the middle of the price quotes we received, and we chose him because he specializes in antique houses and does an outstanding job with them. We've seen his work--his paint jobs last years longer than others

I would NEVER hire someone who wasn't insured. I have always found this out first.

speaking of references, i'm sometimes leery of those negative opinions esp if the majority is either 1.

I don't understand. What do you mean "make it hard for people to work or they are afraid of a lawsuit"?

Would you refer this painter to someone else?

Yep, that's the problem with references. They really don't always tell the whole story. Either they're too nice and don't want to make it hard for people to work or they are afraid of a lawsuit.

I have decided to become the honest reference!

I would DEFINATELY tell someone that the contractor might be "odd" or that they take a long time. I have gotten references from co-workers.

Don't worry, I won't be calling PETA, except perhaps to invite them to a nice veal piccata dinner.

We have no family nearby, except for my ILs who haven't had any work done. We did get references, and they were good, but people are very reluctant to say, "well, he does a great job, but it takes him a year, and he's whacked, so if you can put up with that, great." Most people are concerned about lawsuits and it's pretty hard to describe this guy's behavior.

The buck stops here, though. In spite of the excellent job he has done so far, I would never recommend him. It's not worth the stress or the fear that he'll fall off his ladder and sue us.

To clarify--he does want to come back and finish the job; I just don't want him to, but want to get out of the contract legally and ethically.
