Here are some scary statistics related to prom season:

-Teen traffic deaths during prom season weekend are higher than at any other time of the year.

-An American Medical Association study reported that 10% of parents believed it was appropriate and safe for underage teens to attend both prom and graduation parties where alcohol is served, if a parent is present.

-Most date rapes and sexual assaults against girls are alcohol and drug-related.

-A U.S. Department of Health and Human Services national survey reported 39% of high school senior boys considered it acceptable to force sex on a girl who is intoxicated by alcohol or high on drugs.

What are your rules when it comes to prom night?  Do you host a gathering, or allow your child to stay out all night?  Would it make a difference if was parent supervised, even at a hotel?

Also, what's your dollar limit on how much you'll contribute to prom costs?

My oldest has prom this weekend.  If she were going to a friends house that I know the parents of, I would allow that, and I would be happy to host a gathering if she asked, but other than that, no, she wouldn't be allowed to stay out all night, I don't feel there is a need to, especially knowing they are planning on getting up relatively early the next morning for an all day canoeing outing, I wouldn't want them driving on very little sleep.

We paid for her prom dress and that was it, she is responsible for all other costs associated with her prom.  It wasn't a specific dollar limit, but I did make it clear that I would not be spending a fortune on a dress.  It was a bit more than I would have liked, but we had a snafu with a more reasonably priced dress we ordered online and then it wasn't ready in time, so we had 10 days to find her a replacement dress and alterations if need be.  I am ordering her boutiniere and will pay for it, but only because I've had her pick up a few things at the store for me lately on her way home from work and its more of an exchange.
