I have not seen any indication that in her "sub-culture" people can not come to a wedding ceremony without being invited to the reception. This is just one indication that it can and is done.

Since I hear about the wedding straight from the bride/groom (many have gone through the plans with them for months), I would know if it is a "closed/private" ceremony. I have even been to ceremonies in catering halls (which you would think is normally a "closed" ceremony), as per an invitation from the bride/groom.

I have been personally invited by the bride/groom to come and see them get married. How is that any different?

>> I would go as far as to say that it would be considered rude in this part of the country. <<

Indeed! Same here.

"But you just said that the entire point was for people to see them get married."

Yes, that is why you go to a wedding.

"Anyway, doesn't the extension of invitations, in and of itself, already say that it's a "closed" ceremony?"
Nope

"If you acknowledge that there are lots of reasons for people not to be invited, then how can you even consider going anyway?"
Because I have been invited to see the ceremony by the bride/groom.

"You may not know what the full extent of those reasons really is."
Well if they had a problem with ME, I would not have been invited personally by the bride/groom-shrug.

You know, I had someone crash my first wedding. She was a friend of a friend who was invited. I met her for like 15 minutes about a week before the wedding. She just decided she wanted to come, so she did. It was absolutely irritating. At least she had the decency to bring a gift.

I must be confused. I thought you were talking about people who show up without ANY invitation. If they are church members, and the invitation has been extended to all the church members, then they are not showing up uninvited, are they????/

It is done sometimes if an invitation to the whole congregation is put in the church newsletter. They are still invited.

Well, you may routinely go to weddings all over the place to which you are not invited, but that does not persuade me that going to weddings uninvited is the general custom in all churches in your area. It tells me what you do, but it does not tell me what the general custom or expectation is.
