I am laughing at the very idea that "all" churches are open to the public. My church is literally locked up when there is nothing going on.

I think most people would be too gracious to embarrass an uninvited guest by having them thrown out. That does not mean that uninvited guests are welcome. I have had uninvited guests show up at dinner parties I have thrown, and I usually just set an extra place or two and make the best of the situation. It does not follow that the people who brought these unexpected and univited guests were doing the right thing, socially.

If the bride and groom invite you to the wedding, you are not coming uninvited. You are invited to the ceremony but not the reception.

If you are invited, you are invited. If you are not invited, you are not invited. This does not seem to be a very difficult distinction to understand.

>> Funerals are open unless it is announced that there will be "private" services and I think it would be considered very rude to crash a private funeral service and/or burial. <<

Yes, and usually if they are open, they are announced as such - in the paper or in the church bulletin or what have you.

My father's memorial service was not private per se, but we did not announce the details in the paper. The notice in the paper instructed people to call the funeral home for the details. Everyone we figured really needed to know was told in person, by phone, email or word of mouth.

No. I've already said several times that I understand this to be fairly common in the South.

But just because it's true in one place (parts of the South, and evidently LI), doesn't make it true EVERYWHERE.

Isn't it entertaining how the point keeps changing?

What is the difference if the bride/groom puts an announcement in the church bulletin or the local paper or tells people personally that they are invited to the ceremony?
If you don't get an invitation mailed to you to go to the reception, you are not invited but are more than welcome to go to the ceremony (unless of course it is a closed ceremony or you were told no one but the people invited to the reception are invited to the ceremony).
