It IS normal (IME) as I have stated you can or can not get a formal, oral invitation from the bride/groom and still attend the ceremony.

A sub-culture is not necessarily a geographic area. It can be a religious sub-culture, for instance, or an ethnic or an occupational one. Something might be common among say, Hasidic Jews, and uncommon elsewhere.

How do you know that it is a "closed" ceremony in your area? The bodyguards standing outside checking pew cards? Would you know in advance, or only after you'd gotten all dressed up and decided to go to the ceremony, only to be turned away at the door?
