There are a lot of new posters out there and some old faces, lets all introduce ourselves again...

It's not unique to Vietnam Vets. You can hear this from vets of any war, from elderly WWII vets to young vets just back from Afghanistan. They say it because it's true. Or at least it ought to always be. I'm actually surprised you haven't heard this from a vet yet. You probably haven't poked him hard enough.

It tends to be an inside joke. Are you seriously arguing that Vietnam Vets DON'T say this kind of thing on the basis of the fact that you have never heard your girlfriend's father say such a thing?

Do you seriously not understand that (a) not all people are entranced by weddings or similar ceremonies, and (b) not all families are happy families who really enjoy spending time together even under the best of circumstances?

LOL I've heard it more times than I can shake a stick at it!

I've sat in a VFW and sang I'm Proud to be An American with a whole full-house of military present & past veterans. It's quite a sight! : )

Maybe these posters really haven't taken the time to actually talk to a veteran and understand their feelings and what their service meant to them and what they felt it meant to their country. It could be eye-opening if they actually did that.

Thanks for explaining.

I guess if kids were present, they wouldn't have to necessarily be down in the "action zone" watching a play by play.

I would think it would be more disturbing to see one's mother in so much pain than anything else.

NONE of my ILs were at my wedding, as distance was a barrier. They threw us a kick ass party a few weeks later though, in their town. Oh dear, there I've gone and done it again....

One can be partial to one's own experiences while also acknowledging/accepting/respecting that others have different preferences.

If you can find clergy willing to do it, you can pretty much do whatever. I know a Jewish-Chinese couple who got married by a rabbi, a new-age spiritual teacher type of guy, and had prayers said by a Buddhist monk. Their processional and recessional were traditional Chinese drums. It pretty well rocked.
