I have never heard of that, really. I have heard of churches where it is assumed the whole congregation is invited to the wedding of any church member, but in my sub-culture, if you do not receive an invitation with your name on it, you are not invited.

So next time I am on Long Island and notice a church being set up for the wedding, it is fine if I just drop in for the ceremony? That might be kind of fun. A unique tourist opportunity!

What are you considering a "frou frou" dress?

Well my mom is not from the area I got married in and she said she had people come to her church ceremony that did not come to the wedding. Didn't think that was so odd.
You have never been able to see people get married that you weren't invited to the reception?

The literal definition is one with rustling petticoats, but for a wedding I am imagining one that is a rather traditional white dress with a lot of flounces, lace, maybe a long train or something. Something that you would buy but only wear once, and pay to have preserved, which evidently to you makes much more sense than buying PhD regalia that you will wear multiple times.

I have been to weddings where I was not invited to the reception, and I have been to receptions where I was not invited to the wedding but I have never been to either a reception or a wedding to which I was not invited.

So a plain white dress or ivory or maybe different color would not be "frou frou"?

Can I ask WHY you would not be invited to either or?

A "plain" dress of any sort does not seem to meet any kind of definition of frou-frou, no.

lolol!!! Didn't you see Mamma Mia??!!

I LOVE loud music (especially trance-lol!!) but have never been to a wedding that the music was THAT loud for hours on end. Usually you have quiet music at the cocktail hour and dining time and then the usual things inbetween that they do (cake cutting, bouquet throwing, garter throwing, special dances, other dances (chicken, electric slide), etc. Maybe I have been going to "quiet" weddings for the last 20 years-lol!!
