Just to clarify .. I agree with you that we don't have different definitions. But I am applying it in a somewhat different context (to the whole wedding instead of to just the dress).

"Nah, maybe we just have more friends who want to see us get married :)"

I dunno about that--I actually invited all my friends to my wedding. I didn't leave some out.

"The churches I have ever gone to are thrilled that more people are coming to wish the new couple well on their marriage :)"

Churches get thrilled? Just sayin????!!!! And like I said--the people at the church, they probably thought you were invited guests. Why wouldn't they greet invited guests warmly?

I am having a hard time picturing any relationship I would have with anyone that is close enough for me to want to see them get married where I would not receive an invitation to either the wedding, the reception, or both. Or why I would have friends that I would expect to come to see me get married, but not treat them to the reception afterward.

Oh, I completely get what you mean. The acoustics of the venue also can play a large role in whether the noise level is uncomfortable for some. Also whether your assigned table is near or not near the speakers.

Chicken dance... not for me, thanks.

(Of course, I must follow this statement with the disclaimer that I do not judge nor excoriate anyone whose wedding reception did or will include the chicken dance; it's just not something I personally chose to include in my own wedding celebration.)

Psst! I would think it is a cost issue, or else that only the ones likely to give generously get invited to the actual festivities. As far as I understand, in certain sub-cultures the festivities are a kind of fundraising event.

So you got the where/when information from them directly, or from someone else?

IME, the two usually go hand in hand. Frou frou dress with frou frou event. Not always though.

And it's also subjective. To me, those crazy fancy chair covers are frou frou. To me, they make the room look overdone. Someone else might never consider having a wedding reception without them.

Yes, it's quite one thing to allow someone to see you get married. It's quite another to pay for their $100/head dinner, no?
