Don't you have a "non-applicable" or somewhat similiar on the report cards for things they have not gotten to yet?

Was he in gifted classes in elementary and middle school (not counting this year of AP classes)?

My kids' day care does evaluations the same way. A 3 means they mastered a skill, a 2 means they are making good progress, and a 1 means they are a beginner. The goal is that they get a 3 in all the skills on the list before they transition to the next class. So, when we changed day cares, differences in the order in which the day cares taught things meant DS was ahead of his class in some things, and behind in others. But even the things he was ahead on, he received a 2, because he had not yet mastered the skill (knew 20/26 letter sounds, but had to know all 26 to get the 3). it took us awhile to realize which things he was at a 1 with because the class had just started, and which we needed to help him catch up on.

Yeah, my dd2 was going to be the oldest or the youngest, and we preferred that she be the oldest. I have a late summer birthday too, and I was always the youngest in my class. I didn't want that for my dd2.

The Girl is a freshman (ACK!). However, in our district the freshmen are in the junior high. I love that!

Makes me think of Malcolm and the Krelbournes (sp?).

My kids will be the opposite of your dd. The Girl is like the next to youngest in teh entire freshman class. The Boy is, I think, the youngest boy in the fifth grade and maybe the youngest overall. All of The Girl's friends will be driving well befoire she is ... which disappoints her greatly, lol.

Our MS doesnt' offer classes called AP, but they offer Algebra starting in 7th grade, which is normally a 9th grade course, so there is at least one advanced class in Middle school (there might be others now ... guess I'll find out when we do The Boy's pre-middle school stuff in the fall).

It created a lot of confusion. It seemed completely pointless to have report cards or anything, b/c there was no way of really gauging how the kid was doing, until the end of the year...and by then, it would have been too late to do anything about it, if there was an issue.

When dd was 2ish-3ish and in preschool, her teacher had to mark her really low on some of h er evalaution, especially those that involved speech. Not because dd couldn't speak, or spoke incorrectly, but because she just iddn't. Her best friend at teh time (little Kate), was an avid talker and would often talk for dd. And dd was shy. She'd talk up a storm at home adn with family friends.

So her teacher pulled me aside and said "don't read much into it. I know she's fine. You knwo she's fine. But I can only evaluate according to the standards of the test .. which she doesn't technically meet or exceed. But she's fine."
