My kids all read several levels above what is expected of them at their age and grades. My first grader is currently reading four levels above what will be expected of her class mates in January. Reading, in and of it's self, does not mean that a child is *gifted*.

Didn't you say your child was gifted?

Aren't the kids from school, in his grade, younger than him? I am not speaking of kids in outside of school activities.

I don't think I ever said that it did mean that, did I?

How many of your children did you hold back from starting school when they should have?

How is this question relevant to my experience?

Gifted is gifted .. regardless of age and grade placement. If you're not gifted as a 7yo in 3rd grade, you're not going to be gifted as a 7yo in 2nd grade.

That's not really how gifted works. Many parents who accelerate their gifted child a year find they are in the same boat a year later. They learn more quickly, don't need the repetition. In our school district, eligibility is based on an IQ score. I was surprised both at who did qualify, and who didn't. A high achiever and a gifted child are not always one and the same.
