A sidebar about slang and trends

Since I was ridiculed for using slang, I started thinking about what parents *keep up on* when it comes to their kids. How many parents are in the know about what slang terms mean, what is *in*, what goes on in the subculture of teens, etc? So I was wanting to conduct a bit of a poll...

If your child asked to go to a *rave*, would you know what it was? Would you know what it involves and what may or may not go on there?

As far as todays drug market, do you know what the terms *Crystal*, *X*, *roofies* or *meth* mean? Do you know which drugs are most popular for teens and how they are obtained/used?

What sexual trends have been taking place in junior high schools?

What does a teardrop tattoo under ones cheek mean?

These are all pretty basic and random, but I was just wondering how much parents today keep themselves informed about the possible scenarios for their children? I personally believe knowledge is power and I prefer to keep myself informed about stuff. And having Btdt on a LOT of teen issues, I try to keep myself informed in advance of what may or may not happen.

My dd has said I am a *hip* mom-not in the way of trying to be her friend, but in the almost frustrating way (for her) of KNOWING what goes on in her world. She cant get much by me, and I intend to keep it that way.

I'm not a morning person either, but I think I could adjust. I think she has one of the greatest jobs in the world, even without the salary. She gets to interview all those interesting people, gets to travel all over and they all just look like they have so much fun. Never a dull moment.

Yeah, but a guy wouldn't use a word that begins with "P"!

When I used to go to raves (Let's see, I was around 16-17 so 8 years ago) it was mostly House music, sometimes more techno-ish. I don't know what they do now, since Eminem says techno is "out" LOL. I thought raves were kind of going by the wayside lately.

That's about how it was when I used to go 10 years ago, but I just said "techno" because it covered a larger range of music. Also, it depended where I went - in Brooklyn it was hardcore techno, but in Baltimore there was more house music.

I thought that they were kind of going by the wayside too... but what do I know, it's been a long time since I knew anyone who would know. LOL

Way off topic but we were trying to figure out how many assets we have last Christmas. Here was the conversation:

DH: We are so poor. We don't have any assests beside a stained couch, a microwave the combined ages of our children and a pair of silver candlesticks.

KG: We have a TV too.

DH: Yeah, $20.00 at a pawn shop.

KG: Fine, we also have all your pain medication from your surgeries and treatment. I hear oxycotone is worth alot on the street.

DH: The kids and I will visit you in jail.

We got serious about our budget after that. Now, we own one of our cars! Major excitement.

LOL. When we moved to our suburban town, my DH turned to me and said, "Just promise me you're not going to start wearing Laura Ashley."
Congratulations! I'm so happy to hear it. I just heard the good news and popped back over, just in case you were still checking in.
