Soldier mom refuses deployment

SAVANNAH, Ga. - An Army cook and single mom may face criminal charges after she skipped her deployment flight to Afghanistan because, she said, no one was available to care for her infant son while she was overseas.

Spc. Alexis Hutchinson, 21, claims she had no choice but to refuse deployment orders because the only family she had to care for her 10-month-old son — her mother — was overwhelmed by the task, already caring for three other relatives with health problems.

I doubt she's the first military mother to face this issue... your thoughts?

My thoughts are is that the army has procedures one goes through to prove that a deployment represents an undue hardship, and being a single parent with no one to care for one's child counts as a hardship in about 99.99% of the cases presented. So if this dumdum had gone through official channels, she would have been given an alternate assignment. Instead, she ignored/refused the order to present her case through proper channels, and now she's in jail. Wonder who is caring for her kid now?
