a friend of mine told me yesterday she's putting her 13 YO DS with ADHD in a camp with kids whose issues are along the same spectrum.

Well my first thought is looking at the camp, if this is a camp for children with ADHD, wouldn't they require a diagnosis?

What is that she hopes his eyes open to?

But in general, overnight camps....my boys have gone on them and have greatly enjoyed them in the past.

I also don't see the issue with separation or specialized camps, there are a number of them out there and sometimes it helps for kids to be with peers who are similar to themselves.

So the kids has no friends and you think that sending him somewhere that he may possibly make friends to an issue.

I see no problem with it.

The downside of academic mainstreaming for kids with disabilities is that they can feel isolated socially. This sounds like a great opportunity for him to connect with other kids like him. As long as he wants to go, I don't see the issue. I also think that overnight camps can be a blast for that age group. My 13-yr-old has been going to horse camp for several years and is going again this summer. It's the highlight of her summer.
