I'm curious, how old were you, when you first started serving in your community?

It was not something we did as kids, nor something my parents really did, although my father did serve for many years with a local group seeking to preserve historic houses and regulate zoning to be kid friendly etc.

I did work in student government grades 6 through 9. I was also involved in the national student association, and we had a couple of very successful initiatives in those years that hopefully helped many students.

At my HS, political activism was typically what was emphasized. We also had to run the school. Every function, secretarial, budget, maintenance, curriculum etc, had a committee and all students were required to serve on at least one committee.

i remember my mom helping in the cafeteria of our grade school. she'd bring home these pretzel rods leftover, LOL..i teach RE on sundays but i think it's neat your DD did that, most teachers ( or what we call, catechists ) are older parents with kids in the program.

< in a way babysitting was community service, you didn't turn down a job if you were available, no matter who it was or what the pay was.

I'm not getting in what way paid babysitting is a community service. Or lifeguarding, assuming you were paid for that. Or taking cakes to the neighbors at the holidays. It's very nice, but community service?

If we're including paid work, I could say I do community service 40 hours a week.

I know that I was doing community service by about 8 years old, because that's when I joined 4-H.

i remember getting called at the last minute to watch someone's kid for an hour, sometimes there was "no" pay in that.
