Here is a SAHM who takes careful budgeting to new heights. It must, of course, be noted that since her DH is military, the family is probably covered in terms of health insurance.

oh my lord I'd stab myself in the head with a fork if I was required to be at every practice for a kid. Those four years of soccer nearly killed me... I don't hang out for rehearsals , dance classes or voice lessons... I just read in the car or run errands.. occassionally chat with the friendlier dance moms...
I hear that Bea, I drop DD2 off to dance every Tues on my way to school with pocket change so she can grab herself a snack or drink while she waits for her class to begin. About voice, I had her in that for a while and miss it, I paid 20.00 for 1/2 hour lessons and that teacher was amazing! Voice lessons were like therapy b/c she was able to pull out of her that confidence I knew she had.
A little OT but do you watch Dance moms? We watch it now and then and chuckle at some of the scenes, I swear that coach and those moms are like what I see here, Some moms here have their kids in as many as 14 numbers and it's all about how good you are/n't and kissing behinds. There's a striking resemblence b/w that tv coach and the studio owner here too, Lol!
Yeah we do an hour of voice twice a month for $55 a lesson.. but the teacher is really top notch.. a music director who's highly regarded and he also does a lot of audition coaching and "life lessons' kind of stuff. Dance runs us about $190 a month for 2 ballet classes, 1 jazz, 1 lyrical, 1 modern and 1 pointe class. But she doesn't do the competition team stuff which is where I think the real ugly dance moms tend to be... It's our 10th year at this studio so I've found the moms I know who are 'like minded' and mellow and i hang out with them.
OTOH - we LOVE to watch Dance moms! guilty pleasure!
aw thanks... my dd has never tried hip hop - she says "i don't have moves like that! " LOL but i'm very happy at her dance studio, it's a good home for her.. she's in a Nutcracker, a holiday recital, and a spring recital each year so there are good performance opportunities... and she's really been there with a core group of girls since she was 4.. can't believe they're all goign to be FRESHMEN next year yikes!..
I love to watch sports, all kinds....live in person and on tv/cable/computer. Now concert band...oh boy, that was as struggle, lol.

My kids are in constant contact with their grandparents through their cell phones, they even specifically upgraded to a texting plan a few years ago to keep the flow of communication going with their grandkids! Because you're right, it's a kid thing and I'm glad that their grandparents get that too!

It varies at our school by grade and teacher. The lower the grade, the more restrictions...the higher the grade they more that they encourage responsible use on their own.

I chuckled over the email that I received last night from my younger sons high school coach, telling us about the upcoming spring sports meeting and what she had already told the boys during their practices and snacks was high on the list.

Outside of young children playing sports, football was the only sport that required a parent to be there during the elementary and middle school years for club play. Liability issues. I don't hang out for practices and lessons now, heck I don't even go most times.
