Here is a SAHM who takes careful budgeting to new heights. It must, of course, be noted that since her DH is military, the family is probably covered in terms of health insurance.

"Wagasky, 28, lives with her her husband, Jason, 31, and their two young children in a three-bedroom family home in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Jason, a member of the U.S. Army, completes his undergraduate studies, the family's only source of income is the $14,000 annual cost of living allowance he receives under the G.I. Bill. Despite all odds, the family has barely any credit card debt, no car payment, and no mortgage to speak of."

"By the time Wagasky's husband came home from Iraq, they had managed to scrape together the $30,000 they needed for a downpayment on a home.
"But we decided the best option would be not to have a mortgage payment at all," she said. "We found a fixer-upper that didn't have a kitchen ... and we paid cash." "

I have to confess to some of that too, DD1 horseback rides and when she first started out she was only walking in circles with the horse, Now she's cantering and jumping and it's neat to watch.
t's kind of by grade here too. Grade schoolers aren't allowed to use phones at school, but use them on the school bus. Middle schoolers are allowed to have phones in their lockers, and use them between classes. High schoolers can have their phones whenever, where ever, as long as they aren't disruptive to the learning environment. Most teachers couldn't care less if the kids have them. They are not allowed in gym class or the locker rooms at all.
When DD was in the Nutcracker, her practice time on Saturday mornings was the perfect amount of time to run to the grocery store. Multitasking for the win!
We just started private trumpet lessons for The Boy. He quit Scout to concentrate on music. $25 for a 1/2 hour lesson with the lead trumpet professor at OSU. I love his lessons - gives me 1/2 hour of uninterrupted reading time on the comfy couches in the performing arts center lobby ... lol
Agreed For marching season, I usually go to at least one contest, sometimes two. And at lest one football game/halfime performance. And the "parent performance". For concert season, I go to all their local concerts, which is usually 3 for the HS and 2 for the MS. Every practice would kill me. Granted, they practice at 6:30 or 7am M-F from Aug to October. And they practic from 8-5 for two weeks before school starts. So yeah, no. WE don't go to practics.
Dance has this wierd timeline.. the 4 and 5 year olds are ADORABLE and fun to wath then there's this LONG Stretch from 6 -11 where they're not "good" but they're not so adorable anymore.. then they get really good as teens adn they're a blast to watch.. I hear you..
Outside of young children playing sports, football was the only sport that required a parent to be there during the elementary and middle school years for club play. Liability issues. I don't hang out for practices and lessons now, heck I don't even go most times.
