AWAY! This is the second time in 2 months I have had strep throat. GGGRRRR!! What do you guys do to get rid of it and keep it away. I have never been sick like this in my life. Last time I had it, I literally thought I would die. It didn't seem like an irrational thought at the time. Go figure. I have a Dr apptointment this afternoon to get another round of Zithromax. Nobody seems to be gettin it but me, thank goodness. Is it possible that I didn't kill off all the bacteria last time, (since it was so bad)and now it has just surfaced again? Anyhow I am on the advil high and thought I would post and apologize for dropping out of the threads, and ask my question. Be back when I can.

One thing to remember is to throw out all toothbrushes and get new ones when you are over it (or possibly 48 hours after starting the antibiotics, can't remember exactly when you should switch). It is something that is easily overlooked, but tooth brushes can harbour the bacteria.

Zak had it twice last winter. I have never seen him in so much pain-he would just lay there and complain his throat was on fire. They gave him a shot which took the pain away instantly. He had it again two weeks later and they gave him a round of antibiotics. I hope the antibiotics keep it away and be sure to throw away those toothbrushes!

Sorry you are suffering...

Do you have a dog? They can be carriers of strep.

EEEWWWW! We have 3 dogs! HMMMMM! I may have a new reason to get rid of them!! WOOOHOOO! I mentioned strep carriers (human) to my dh and he just snorted at me. Makes me wish I had married that doctor. LOL just kidding. Will the vet test them?

Do you still have your tonsils? my dd had seven positive throat cultures in five months, and shots of penicillen each time. she ended up having her tonsils out, and hasnt had it since. hate to say it, but its true.

Well... short of getting the tonsils yanked... which I wish I could do.... I think your next best bet is keep yourself up with a super multivitamin! Hope you are feeling better! Courtney

or you could just have them treated with antibiotics as you are, eliminating the problem.

Yes, mention to your vet that you've had several unexplained cases of strep and want the dogs tested. As far as I recall (my DCP's poodle ended up being the cause of a never ending round of strep in her daycare when my son was little), they treat them with antibiotics just like they do people; it's just that dogs typically don't show symptoms of strep like humans do.

You *were* kidding about getting rid of the dogs, right?

That's how I finally had my out when I was 23. Let me tell you, recovery as an adult is HORRIBLE!!!!!!! It was weeks before I could eat anything even remotely spicy.

LOL Yes and no. I hate these dadgum doges being all underfoot, but I they have been around long enough that I am attached. We have an 8yo pom, 8 month old bassett, and a 5 month old mutt that dh thought was cute. The puppies are making me crazy. I used to have good carpet. LOL! The kids play with the dogs more, but they haven't gotten strep, so I don't think they are carrying it. I think I just forgot to throw my toothbrush away.
