As a kid, I remember visiting my Dad's family in North Carolina every summer. I grew up with all sisters but there were boy cousins there and with them I learned to be more physically daring, to hunt snakes and frogs and swim in the pond. The culmination was a big 4th of July party. This summer has been an odd one. It is the older one's last summer at home before leaving for college. We haven't seen much of him, he is off with his girlfriend or friends or working much of the time. The younger one has beeen gone a lot, too. He's at a French immersion camp right now, almost halfway through his session. The good news is, I still like DH and I think we are going to be happy empty nesters together. As for traditions with our kids, we usually do a big trip every other year. They have been to between 42-46 of the fifty states and to most of western Europe. The older one usuallly does a service/mission trip every summer, too.
