What surprises have you had in parenting?

You mean today?

I am constantly surprised by my kids and by the whole experience of parenting. It is the most arrogant thing a person can do, and also the most humbling.

That I wouldn't have an uninterrupted night's sleep in 3 years, LOL. Between the two of them, I had to get up 5 times last night.

I've had two big ones.

How stressful I would find the infant/toddler years.

I did quite a lot of babysitting so thought that it would be fairly easy but being responsible for a few hours for a small part of an infant/toddler life is much different than being responsible for everything 24/7.

How easy the teen years would be.

I don't know how many times I heard bad things about the teen years. Since I have three DDs I have had a lot of "Just wait until they are teens." I found the teen years fairly easy.

Your giving me hope... about the teen years...

So far Iam really enjoying this new stage in their lives and mine, although we just started it.

This may sound ridiculous but its suprising to me and down right shocking how many times my kids can say mom.

I like my teens, too. Maybe this will change--they are just 13 and almost 15--but things would have to be radically different for that to happen. I've always liked them, really. Even though both have gone through some challenging developmental phases, the good so clearly outweighed the bad that my opinion of them never changed.

i babysat alot, too and had alot of preconceived notions of what parenting would be like until i became one.

a rememberance that sticks out is what my mom told me when she saw my oldest, i don't think those profound words registered with me then like it does for me today, so yea that's a surprise.

hearing my kids say,

How both fast and slow it all went. My mom saying that homeschooling didn't harm the girls. Having Erica say that we were the right parents for her while she was growing up. That alone made it all worth while.
