Gender is part of nature, though.

I don't think that loving sports is inherent to boys or that reading or art or music are inherent to girls. But I do think there are differences between boys and girls, in the way they play and the way they act, that I don't think are just about nurture. For me, that's not a bad thing.

I think the biggest surprise has been that they do listen somehow even when it seems like nothing you do is getting through.

Also, nature is strong and nature wants the kid to succeed, so even when you goof up, it will usually end up being all right in the end.

At least with teens you get breaks. You do not have to supervise them 24/7. I think that was a big part for me, each level of independence made things easier.
