My oldest is 14, and as scared he is of just regular needles don't think this is something I'll be dealing with for awhile. I was curious if any of your kids have asked for or gotten a tattoo or body piercing. I've thought of getting a tattoo before, but haven't found any design that I want to permantly put on my body, although my dh got a tattoo a few years ago. I joke that his was from a mid-life crisis
What was your reaction and did they need your permission to get it done in your state? Even with their parent's permission, what age do you think is appropriate for either?

Like I said before, She can't color her whole head, but my daughter does strands or tips from time to time. I actually think she is happy with that, and wouldn't go for the whole head anyway, it's too much to maintain, and she is kind of a low maintenance girl. My son had a mohawk once, when he was little. Got that out of his system and now he wants nothing to do with it.
I figure if I give a little, maybe they won't go completely crazy when all up to them.
We allowed my daughter to get her nose pierced for her 14th birthday just a few weeks ago.
I'm totally OK with blue hair or or wild makeup, but she's never wanted any of that. She talked about getting her nose pierced a full year before we allowed her to do it. I made her write a research paper about the proper care and all of the possible complications, and I sat down with her to make her look at photos of scars and read stories of regret (there were surprisingly few). After that, I made her wait a full six months and made her save up the money to do it. At one point, I made her ask openly on Facebook for opinions. All of her grandparents and great-grandparents, aunts, distant cousins, and even a few friends weighed in and gave her a really difficult time about it. She was afraid I'd change my mind based on that and I explained to her that I wasn't interested in parenting by committee, but I wanted her to understand what everyone else thought. I made her wear a marker dot for a week on each side of her nose before she had it done so that she could get used to the idea and choose the proper side. She was mortified, but remained committed.
All she is interested in wearing is a dainty little stud. No barbells, no hoops. She's not interested in any other piercings or tattoos (which is good, because she fully understands that this nose piercing was my personal limit.) Neither my husband or I have tattoos or piercings, nor are we interested in them.
