Do students ever write you to tell you how much they've learned/enjoyed your class?

I am considering doing so, but I wouldn't want it to feel out of place.

I had the option of leaving comments on the evaluation form, but I was brutally honest on that form and I really wanted my assessment to remain anonymous.

On one hand, my teacher was horrible. He was late to class all of the time, he took weeks in some cases to post grades. We spent the first 16 class sessions going over the first four chapters and only class sessions skimming over the last four. We never did a presentation outlined in the syllabus, though he didn't tell us that he'd decided against it until we were 3/4 of the way done with the class. We didn't have a comprehensive final exam, either - just the last unit exam. I'm sure his evaluations all reflected his lack of organization.

On the other hand, his insights were magnificent. I think I learned more in his class than any other class I've ever taken before.

I have a small collections of notes I have received over the years from students. The ones I cherish most are the ones I get from graduaing seniors who have often had multiple classes with me. I keep them in a file in one of my desk drawers. I seldom if ever actually take them out and look at them, but knowing they are there has gotten me through a lot of frustrating days because they help remind me of at least one part of why I do what I do.

i haven't done that, but there are end of term evaluations i've noted satisfaction on before. there's a class i registered for next semester and i scheduled myself for the time and day this specific professor is teaching it because i've had him before for another class and he's a great teacher. good teachers are a reflection of the school and i have told people in and out of that college what great teachers are there. i think what you want to do is a nice idea.

Whenever I have had a really great teacher, I usually use the evaluations at the end of the semester to let him/her know. I don't think I have ever sent a separate note, but in some cases I think I probably should have. I don't think it would be out of place at all.

Warm fuzzies, and for adjunct faculty like myself, it also means they may invite me back next semester.

Thank you so much for the response!

I think I'll wait to send out after my final grade has been posted.
