Trouble deciding to go to the Dr?

I have to admit I am paranoid about illness right now since Devin's new chemo decreases his immunity. He is taking antibiotics as a precautionary measure since we have one school age child. I take my children to the ped pretty often. They go at least once a quarter but they both have asthma.

Zak woke up this morning and his head hurt. He has a bad cough but he doesn't feel like he has strep. He knows when he has strep. He isn't running a fever, either. He was in tears about going to school because his head hurt so bad. I made him go anyway. Talk about Mommy guilt.

There have been times when I had a hard time deciding. But then I was glad when I brought them. Once I really didn't think DS1 was very sick. I took him to the Dr and he had strep and a double ear infection. Lately I took him because I was *sure* he had a sinus infection. He had nothing. Sometimes it's worth it just to put your mind at ease. Oh and DS2 was good friends with the school nurse in both his elementary schools! And they just love him to death and treat him with kid gloves, the stinker.

Well, he just called me from school saying his stomach hurt. The teacher said he really, really wanted to talk to me. We agreed that he would go to the doctor this afternoon. I asked the nurse to put a note on the file that it might just be stress. Now that I have done that, he will have a roaring case of strep throat again and I feel even more guilty.

I would take him BECAUSE it is is about to be a holiday, and it will be at least 4 days before the Dr is open again.

Generally, if Zak says he is sick then he is sick but lately he has had all sorts of aches and pains.

In September, he told me his throat hurt and he had strep throat. Since he wasn't running a fever and he just started complaining his throat hurt, I was deeply suspicous. I asked him if there was something going on at school that caused him to not want to go.

My DS2 has done that as well. Recently, right before our vacation at the beginning of the month he was complaining about a tummy ache. Turns out he was *very* stressed about flying on an airplane to California. All he could think about were planes flying into the WTC. Poor little guy. I could have cried for him. It turned out fine, but he was really not happy about getting on a plane.

You might want to ask him if he is nauseous at all, or if his eyes are sensitive to light.

I have been wondering if he was getting migraines or if they were sinus headaches. Would you actually get sick from them?

I would not be surprised if Zak's stress is manifesting in physical aches and pains.

I have a GF who takes her child to the Dr with EVERY little sniffle and cough. I tend to wait until an uncontrollable fever or a limb falls off on one of my kids!!!

I don't think it's unreasonable to take him to the doctor's. As Melissa said, given that the long holiday is coming up everyone may feel better knowing that he checked out OK. Also, as others said, Zak's aches and pains may be associated with what's going on with his dad, but if he wants a little more attention, I think I'd give it to him (not that you don't give him attention already.... and I have a feeling that some veteran moms will call me a wimp...)

BTW.. re: I have a feeling he'll do OK with all this. :)

Yes.
