Underage Drinking

We have friends who find nothing wrong with allowing their 16 year olds to drink. They allow them to have beer pong parties with their friends (because they are doing it in their home) and allow them to try different types of wines (In their words "to make them a connoisseur of wine").
We find this unacceptable as if they are doing it at home, you know they are doing it elsewhere and these kids are able to drive now so I can not believe that none of them ever drive home drunk.
What does everyone think of this?

You went from calling it stupid to trusting some kids in two posts, It's either stupid or not.
My boys were both in their mid-teens when they first were at a party or school function where alcohol was introduced. One told me that he was at a school function and some older kids came and told him where the "good punch" was being served -- evidently some kids managed to spike some punch at a school social. The next time, was at a graduation party when he was a sophomore. The family had rented out a restaurant, and the adults were in one room and the kids were dancing (and secretly drinking) in the room right next door. Most kids are going to come in contact with underage drinking at some point.
No, I didn't. I said that it was stupid to offer alcohol to kids who are not your own, and I said that I trusted my friends to know when it was OK to allow THEIR OWN KIDS to drink occasionally, such as having a taste of champagne on New Year's Eve, or as you pointed out, a few sips of wine at Sunday dinner. Since it's legal, and my friends generally have good judgement, it's really nothing that concerns me.
None of the adults were aware of the situation in both cases -- of course it concerns me. But I expected that at some point in their lives, my teens would run into illegal drinking. I told them how I expected them to act when that occurred -- I was pretty sure that it was going to be a "when" rather than an "if." In the case where the alcohol was being passed around secretly at the graduation party, the parents in charge were absolutely mortified when they found the empty bottle (or bottles, I don't even remember) in the trash when they were cleaning up, and they called or e-mailed every parents of every kid there to apologize.
