Vacation...

This came across my facebook page and I thought it was interesting, not specifically because of Disney World and the drama from here that goes with not wanting to go to DW, but the overall thought of disappointing "vacation spots".  Do you have any?  Do you agree with any on the list?  Have you been to any on the list?

I've been to Hollywood, Nassau, Frankfurt, Disney World, Vegas..so half of them and I pretty much agree with the article, they tend to be overrated destinations.

I was very dissapointed with a spot we stopped at in South Dakota, near Mount Rushmore, it was supposed to be cliff dwellings, but I should have known better since it wasn't a state park. I was also dissapointed in Madame Tussauds in London, too much hype and it didn't deliver.  We have traveled quite a bit over the years and I have found our misses to be much smaller in comparasion though with our hits, so overall good I think.

Well, you know how I feel about Disney World :D  Clearly I don't agree there.

Where I got really confused was this alleged travel writer acting like Frankfurt Germany or Casablanca, Morrocco really ARE legitimate vacation destinations.  They're not; they're just the big transit hub.   So those should never have been on the list to begin with.

And while I'm no big fan of Nassau, The Bahamas, I wonder if they're just supposed to be shorthand for pretty much every other major cruise destination in the Caribbean (which, as we all know, I also love, but....)  C'mon, you're gonna rag on Nassau and NOT any place in the Haiti???

I totally agree with Vegas.  Total rip-off and completely boring.

I've only been to four of them, and none are places I would go to in purpose again. Vegas is some place I would go out of my way to avoid. Can't see myself ever going to any Disney again unless I have grandchildren who would like to go. It might be fun to take them at the right age. My own kids were never interested in Dusneyworld; I offered several times and they always picked someplace else. We are going to to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls this summer, God willing.

I thought Frankfurt was where you just got on and off the plane at.

The only one on the list I've been to as an adult is Nassau. And I was very very disappointed. It was dirty, bleak and just not much fun. Even the food was "meh". Granted, I was only there a day, and it was a drizzly, overcast day. But it was disappointing. Even more so when I saw there was a MCD's on every corner. I've only been to WDW as a kid, so I loved it, lol. I truly have no desire to go there again as an adult, however.

I was pleasantly surprised by DW when we went 7 years ago. I really expected to hate it, but was willing to put up with it for the sake of the kids. However, I loved our hotel (Animal Kingdom Lodge), especially the restaurant, Boma, which had interesting African dishes. The whole park is artificial, as you'd expect, but once we suspended disbelief and went with it, we had fun. My cynical kids made up a story about "Mickey the Slaughterer" and DD was shocked to be bitten by a real mosquito. ("These animatronic mosquitoes actually bite!)

I usually try to find something to like about my vacation, mainly because I hate the idea of spending money on something disappointing, but I didn't find Mont St. Michel to be that great. I loved the idea of the place, love medieval architecture, but the crowds and stifling heat made it hard to really see. I think I just wanted it to be lonely and mysterious, and it wasn't. Oh, and our sandwiches were crappy and overpriced. Bad food in France should not be.

Have never been to Vegas, but it doesn't sound like my kind of place. I've only changed planes in Frankfurt, so can't comment on that either.

It would be interesting to see a list of destinations people expected to hate, but didn't.

"Do you agree with any on the list? Have you been to any on the list?" ----------- I lived in Hollywood for a while, but I would never have thought of it as a vacation destination. I also lived in and around NY for a long time, and I have never been to Liberty Island, not even when I had out-of-town visitors. You can see the statue without standing on line forever and schlepping out there.

Does anyone go to Frankfurt for anything other than changing planes or the book fair?
