Yes, I know the kind you mean. I suspect that the kind in the pic (and at my mother's house) was not designed to be for dowry, but that is what my g-grandma used it for.

There are some nice patterns but for the majority, I am not into them either. I have 2 change purses and they are cute but I don't have any handbags and probably would never buy one.
I don't care for many of the patterns but some of them are very nice.
It always reminded me of craft projects from a magazine or from a retirement home, but to each his own, obviously.
I know the ones you mean, I think, the decorated stuff, right? We have some of those too (great-great grandpa was a sea captain who had a route to China). But this is actually a completely plain storage chest, foot locker style, out of some beautiful wood, lined with cedar, and with brass reinforcements and closing mechanism. Her initials are engraved on a brass plate on the lid.
ETA: Found a pic, all the way to the left in the back of the room behind the office chair, there is a plain wooden chest with some framed pics on it. The pic is from the NYT, but the chest is almost identical to g-grandma's.
