if you did not have kids?

I would be a season ticket holder of the local ball team. DD3 hates baseball so dragging her to all the games is not a good option nor is leaving her home for 7-10 game home game stretches twice a month. In a few years we'll be able to join all the other empty nester season ticket holders but until then we will have to be satisfied with just seeing about one game per home stretch.

Hockey games/being a season ticket holder. And the symphony. And attending yoga weekends in the Berkshires or concerts at Tanglewood. Poetry readings. Browsing bookstores without having to listen to, "Come ON Mom, let's go." Going to the ballet. Going to Termintator 3 without having to get a babysitter. Going to dinner, Terminator 3, and maybe ice-cream afterward without having to worry about how much the babysitter was costing.

I can think of more things. Do you want them?

I would lounge at the pool without having to get in when the water is cold! My DH and I might be able to go on vacation together. I would pursue my hobbies more and I would take some college classes.

Traveling a LOT more. We take 3-4 vacations a year as it is, before kids I usually went somewhere every other month (one of the perks of working for an airline!).

Absolutely NOTHING. I can honestly say that we do pretty much anything we please, especially since the boys are old enough to not need a sitter. In fact, if I didn't have kids I'd probably be working a full-time, year round job instead of taking the kids to the beach and pool and park all summer. Hell, now I have an excuse to be sitting in my jammies, sipping my coffee at home instead of that rancid office swill, reporting to some schmuck at a high pressure job. We still travel a lot, take at least 4 vacations a year and having kids even gives us an excuse to visit Disney without looking like doofuses (doofi?).

The years of having to go in the water, etc. with your kids are very short. We're at a stage now that you can even get some work out of the ankle biters. They can help with groceries, weeding, vacuuming, making their own meals, etc. Ah yes, life is good.

I would never, ever trade having kids for whatever "freedom" I would have had. I don't feel the least bit restricted. Best thing that ever happened to me.

Lol, *Doofi*, thats hilarious! I agree with you. My dd is 12 and she just becomes more helpful as she gets older-I dont have a problem with assigning her some chores and such, and she can actually do a good job of it! And we havent let being parents keep us from much of anything (except a good nights sleep on occasion, lol).

One of my best friends has 4 kids, ages 23,21,14 and 10. She has always told me that those early years are SO SO short, that my kids wont *need* me long before I am ready. It helps me keep things in perspective and remember to try to cherish those early years.

And I get a kid-like enjoyment out of things like disneyland, playing at the shallow end of a cold pool, even parent teacher conferences. Maybe partially because I was childless for so many years, those things seemed very *exotic* to me, and even now I have to look around every so often and think *Wow!! I'm a MOM!* :o)
