When DH and I first got married, he showed me the system he and his mom used and we've been using it ever since. We get a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle. On one side, we write down the days of the week and then plan out what we want to have. On the other side, we write down all of the things we need to buy in order to make those things-- usually we start this side early and add stuff as we use it up as well.

We have tweeked it a little bit over the years. Sometimes I write in a corner or on the back a list of all the stuff from the CSA and/or garden that we need to use up. And we also usually have a section for things we need to buy at Target, rather than the grocery store.

I think it works much better than the way my mom used to do it, which was to go to the store every couple of weeks and buy massive amounts of food and then come home and figure out what to do with it. I'm like you, it seems to make it easier to start cooking, if we don't have to figure it out at 4:30pm when we get home and are starving.

The only time I need to do this is if I am trying out something new that has ingredients that I don't always have in my house.

The spaghetti squash thing that I just posted about is super easy.

I'll try to post the CSA recipe when I get home.

I think the thing that bothered me was the texture. Are the stringy things soft? This does sound really good though. I think I'll have to try it. I may know what I'm making on Sunday . . .

That's probably the difference.

They aren't super-soft.

I try and keep a big variety of things in my house so I can try new things without having to go out to shop.

We have to shop every week for things like milk and yogurt anyway.
