Where would you cut?

With all this talk of cutting budgets in the air, I am wondering what options people have considered if their families were forced to cut expenses.  What changes in your spending would you make if you had to cut your spending by thirty percent?

To the question of could we live on one income.  It depends on which one,  DH's easily, mine, impossible.  He has always been by far the primary income provider, for many years the only one.

Actually, the question wasn't whether you would get severance pay if you had no job, Cherubs. The question was, and I'll put it in all caps, so it's clear, "IF YOU WERE FORCED TO NAKE A THIRTY PERCENT CUT IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD SPENDING, WHAT WOULD YOU CUT?" So far you've spent several dozen posts not answering the question. If you weren't going to answer the question, the classy thing to do would be stay off the thread so that those of us who are willing to discuss hypothetical spending cuts can do so without being splattered with all this persiflage.

Jams, you are making this far more difficult than it really is.  Lets say your or your husband lost your job, how would you adjust your budget?

Sorry you don't like my answers Bord. Peachy asked me about losing my job tomorrow, I told her. I did answer what I would cut and it would most likely be savings as of right now there would not be anything I would cut AND I would find more opportunities to make money. Sometimes answers are not always black and white as everyone is different, you know. If you plan properly, the cut would not affect you that much (as many have said also). Just when I say that, I am wrong. Hmm.....

"I did answer what I would cut and it would most likely be savings as of right now"

That's the FIRST time you've said that.  If you had just said that from the beginning, we could have avoided the merry-go-round.

Everybody else, Cherubs, managed to find some coherent answer, with the exception of Jams who is still trying to figure out percentages. All you needed to say was you would cut back on savings. That is a reasonable answer. It is what several people said. Instead you come up with this rigmarole about how you could not possibly cut anything and went from there. Fine. You would stop making payments into your savings accounts. Thanks for playing.

Well, we would use savings and unemployment until he found another job. Unless it was a dire situation where we could not pay our main bills or eat we would continue to do what we normally do. We don't have a one income family so there would be another income coming in also ----------This was one of my first posts when I said that.

Jams, expenses come out of your income. The income is how much you have coming in. The expenses are how it goes out. You can't do much about taxes, so lets talk net income after taxes. You suddenly have 30 percent less. Like if your net income is 10K a month, now you have 7K. What are you going to do?

Chubs, that does not answer the question.  But again, thanks for playing.
