With all this talk of cutting budgets in the air, I am wondering what options people have considered if their families were forced to cut expenses.  What changes in your spending would you make if you had to cut your spending by thirty percent?

What is 30% of your expenses...  And where does income factor into that if at all?

We used to have 7 days. Liked the Sunday for the coupons but I get them delivered in a free Saturday paper now.

We've gotten figuratively fat and lazy lately, but we've always saved for retirement, college, and contributed to charity as a percentage of our income, so we increased all the too as our income increased.

We used to live quite well on half our income. We always budgeted to be able to live on one income and we've had two almost our entire married life. We've lived by percentages, 20% for retirement, 10% for college savings, 10% charity, 35% for taxes (fed, state, local), and 25% for everything else. Automatic cuts to all categories by 30%.

On discretionary: Cut Cable Premium channels, HBO, Sho and Sports packages would go. Cut data plans on all cells, Cut club memberships. Sell boat. Cut ticket packages to Pats and Sox. Travel less, more staycations. Budget groceries, clothing.and entertainment expenses. Turn down the thermostat in winter, raise it in summer. Drive less. Cut art and music lessons for kids.

We sound like rich, entitled twits - We're not rich, we've done well and we enjoy the benefits of the extra income. Maybe we should do the about cutbacks anyway?

The question is the same, regardless.  In what ways would you adjust your spending if you or your dh were unemployed tomorrow?
