Which plan are you looking at?

I see by clicking on the "calling plans" tab:

East Hampton
Verizon Freedom Essentials: $39.99 - $44.99/mo
Verizon Freedom Value: $34.99 - $39.99/mo (the one I was talking about, which still isn't as basic as the one we have.)
Verizon Freedom: $63.99
Verizon Freedom Extra: $66.99 - $73.99

Morgantown
Verizon Freedom Essentials: $49.99
Verizon Freedom Value: $44.99
Verizon Freedom: $61.99
Verizon Freedom Extra: $66.99

Also, if I go up to the red phone tab at the top and select "Local and Long Distance Plans," then click on the gray "Plans" tab, I see that in East Hampton, you can get the equivalent of what we have for $19.05 - $23.00. In Morgantown, it costs $15.25.

You do have to add in taxes, but even with taxes I can't imagine that a $23.00 phone bill turns into $60. Obviously, $60 is not the most basic plan.

It is important to us but it is still a luxury.

I did it that way for a couple years, I paid for the entire year by mail but I included $20.00 for the carrier.

More ways to cut costs and save that do not involve cable:

1) Get an energy audit to see if your windows are leaking so much it would be better to get new ones.

My dd has cable, Nintendo DS and other electronic toys and she is still outside playing all day.
