My husband's cousin lives in England, and they would have to pay a TV tax if they even owned a TV. I guess inspectors come fairly regularly to make sure they don't have one.

Lots and lots of preschool-aged children live in apartment buildings.

I don't pay for or buy anything I don't use and therefore need.

I do not. When my older son was a toddler, we lived in a two bedroom apartment for several years. We didn't even have TV. We *did* have three large parks and a public library within walking distance, a skating rink a mile away, a car to go on more distant outings, and a stroller. Life was good.

Oh yeah!

We have lived in England several times for periods ranging from a summer up to a whole year. In the 1980s, they used to come knocking on the doors of all the people who didn't have licenses and tell them they needed one. They never acted like they believed us when we said we didn't have television. Nowadays they have trucks with equipment that can evidently detect an unlicensed TV in use, and the fines are humongous.

You have a very strange definition of "need."

We pay for things we don't "need" all the time. I just bought tickets to take my kids to see the "Christmas Carol" next month. They don't "need" to see it. It'll just be fun. Don't you and your kids ever do something just for fun?

I was going to mention that some people graduated from high school the year I was born, but I thought I probably shouldn't . . .
