If I couldn't eat, I would then cut out cable. I feel I am still making interest off of my savings in those 6 months that we can save. We don't travel much and try not to go to many places that involve spending alot of money so by being home, we watch TV, movies and go on the internet.

It isn't always possible to pick and choose in certain professions. I think rather than berating people who are stuck with long commutes as bad planners, it would be much more effective if city planners could start working on solving the problems so that everyone can live closer to work and have good public transportation opportunities...preferably before gas hits $10 per gallon.

You pride yourself on how much you can get for a dollar, but you don't really ever consider just not getting anything you don't need. Whether you are used to cable or not, it is not a necessity, it is a luxury.

If I had problems saving money, I would have no problem in the world identifying what it is I would need to cut, and I would do so. I have not always had the luxury of the luxuries I have now; I know what it is to live frugally.

I don't believe a bigger TV addict exists (at least on this board) than me, and I would cancel cable in an instant if the choice were cable or savings. And have done so. did I like it? No, i did not. would I do it again? In a heartbeat.

cable is not necessary.

There are certainly people who have no choice. But I am reasonably certain that many people do have choices and choose (for whatever reason) a long commute.

I agree that city planners do need to work on making public transportation more available and efficient.

The town I live in has major traffic problems (narrow roads, bad terrain, rapidly expanding population). It would take me approximately the same amount of time (30 minutes) to drive the two miles to work as it does for me to walk/take public transportation. They are currently planning to start taxing anyone who works in my county $2/week to use to fix the roads. I would prefer that they use that money to improve public transportation, implement park and rides, and give incentives to those people who do not drive their cars to work. My MIL worked at Cal State Long Beach, and they gave gift certificates to anyone who didn't drive to work. It was a really cool program . . .

"There are certainly people who have no choice."

Exactly, but you didn't really give the benefit of the doubt to Sue's daughter. You just assumed that she chose to live with the commute she has.

Some friends of ours chose a longer commute because they wanted to buy a cheaper house or live further out into the country, so I know that happens as well. We didn't choose that and we did pay more for our house than a good number of our friends. Otoh, we have 4 different bus lines and 3 different tram lines within walking distance of our house, and getting to the center means a 10 minute bus ride. We had the luxury of a choice and took it. But I know others who don't really have a choice and have to suck it up.

The reason you would cut out cable first is because you do not watch TV. So, you really don't understand why people who do enjoy it would pay for it. Just like there might be something you enjoy to do that I think it is a waste of money.

Yes and those choices could be that it is safe to live where they live and that their work is in a not so good area.

I am certain that there are a lot of things that I spend money on that you or someone else might consider a luxury, even a frippery. The difference here is that I am not spending money on fripperies or luxuries and then complaining that I cannot save money. My luxuries and fripperies come only AFTER my bills are paid, our investments are considered, and our charitable impulses are satisfied.
