We combined our cable/internet and phone and saved money. Right now, if you break it down we are paying $78/cable-$68 for internet AND phone. We were getting up to $60 just for our phone years ago.

What are things that you would not spend money on before saving? Just trying to get an idea what more than cable or furniture you would not spend on first.

I lived in Boston. It was hardly good money. But again, still managed to save a bit.

I have to say that I seriously doubt Sue's daughter doesn't have any other choice. I think number of people truly have no choice about spending $400+/month on gas are few and far between. Of course, Sue's daughter may not have any choice, in which those would be what I consider "extreme" circumstances.

Like I said originally, unless there were an extreme set of circumstances, it is not a choice I would make.

I see this much like the savings conversation. Are there people who have no choice to save? Sure, but there are a lot more people who complain about not being able to save, when they clearly could if they were willing to go without certain things.

There are a lot of people that could make choices that allowed them to spend less money on gas, but they don't (for whatever reasons).

Are you asking me what luxuries *I* would cut if we needed to save money or even dip into our savings suddenly? I would cut out buying any stuff that we don't need. I would look at each item in the budget and figure out how I could trim it. Everyone's situation is different.

Personally, we don't have a lot of cushion in some of our categories, such as clothing. But we do have a lot of luxuries. We'd cut on discretionary travel, for sure. I'd make my kids mow the lawn and cut out the lawn service. The kids wouldn't get to go to whatever camp they wanted in the summers. I'd cut out on some of the groceries we like -- we could eat ordinary apples instead of Honeycrisps, and drink regular tea instead of spicy chai. That's just a start.

Yes, there are a number of reasons someone might make that choice. Like I said, it is not a choice I would make unless I was faced with very, very, very limited choices.

That's a shame.

WV has the 6th largest state highway system in the US, but the 14th smallest population. Needless to say, they are terrible. I prefer walking as I get exercise in addition to not having to pay for the gas. I don't like driving and like sitting in traffic even less.
