I would not choose to live in a rural area and drive 15 minutes to get to the city. I grew up 20 minutes from "town." I think my parents spend a ridiculous amount of money on gas to live where they do.

Yes, circumstances change. But if I were to suddenly need to drive an hour a day, I would think I was spending a ridiculous amount of time in the car and money on gas. And I would be trying really, really hard to figure out a way to not have to do that anymore.

And what type of position would that be?

I think spending $400/month on gas is ridiculous. I don't think I've said I think your daughter's choices are ridiculous. Just that they are not ones that I would make, as I think spending $400/month on gas is ridiculous.

The work I do does not exists in small towns -- there's a dearth of performing arts centers in small townsfor me to work at so I should change my whole career?

Perhaps I am stubborn. But there are a lot of medium to large sized towns that have good job prospects and do not require commuting.

Yup. I said that in one of my first posts to you.

I think gas prices are ridiculous too but the fault lies in our dependence on foreign oil, the lack of wilingness of Congress to pass better fuel efficiency standards, lack of a willingness to investigate and perfect alternate sources of energy and insane oil monopolies -- sure it also lies

I certainly wouldn't say my choices have been driven by the price of gas. But rather that I see great value in living and working in the same community.
