Really? I always like to think that my children's children will be able to use things of my own. There are many things my parents have saved for me and my sister through the years. To me, furniture can last a lifetime or more if taken care of well. Like I said, my dd is using mine and it is still in great condition.

We have only one car (only need one). We spend about $50/month, if that, on gas. We drive to the grocery store, appointments, to visit my parents and DH's mom, and other miscellaneous trips. DH occasionally drives to work, but he works about 1/4 mile from our house. And sometimes DH will pick me up from work if we are going somewhere afterward (usually eating out or to the grocery store). I think the last time I drove anywhere was last Sunday. We spend more if we travel, but since we moved back to WV we don't travel as much. We used to spend about $100/trip on gas to drive from IL to WV (two tanks each way).

In my ideal world, people would live and work in the same community.

I guess we just live VERY different lives. You lived barebones and I never would. I would found some kind of part time job when my dh did not work to bring in some money, especially at Christmas time. Choosing to pay the electric or the food bill is not good enough for me.

honestly that would make me nutty -- I like getting away from my job. I don't want to live down the street from it -- give me a little space please....

Maybe it is because there is nothing else anyone can find for me to cut. That basically shows you that I do not spend money like there is no tomorrow. We are saving for retirement, college, have life insurance, medical bills, mortgage, taxes, homeowners, utilities, food, cars, etc. like most other people do.

It doesn't bother me "so much." I would not choose a career that required me to commute.

If I wanted to be an ER nurse, but wanted to live in the country, I'd probably look for a small rural hospital to work in.
