I work 3 1/2 miles from work and still spend $20-$30/week on gas.


I think your situation is very uncommon to have one car and not drive many places. My sister is a sahm and she is out everyday driving. There is always some errand to do or bring her son to school.

I think that there is a problem in that people are completely willing to live and work in different communities, rather than working to make the community they live in a place they can work or the community they work in a place they can live.


Well my community is about 5 square miles.

Not always. My father always commuted when he worked here in NY. The job was stable and paid much better than anyplace around our town.


I would want a job close to home if I moved but I wouldn't make it my first priority if the pay was good.

There are disadvantages. Especially working in a public service job. People start recognizing you, and it makes it hard to run to the grocery store in your pajamas. And if I do that, I'm guaranteed to see someone I know.
