I have been fundraising in very public jobs for the past 18 years in NH -- I see someone I know nearly eveyr time I go out -- but at least in Manchester I'm more on my home turf than in Concord where the theater is an anchor of the city.
Yes. We. Did.
Of course not.
I'm not sure why you're pretending this is such a foreign concept to you, considering how much of West Virginia is considered part of the DC Metropolitan area, based on the census data showing how many WV residents work in and around DC. I get you think you're always going to have the luxury of living near where you work, and if you do, you'll be very lucky. That's simply not the case for everyone and similarly, not everyone can pick up stakes and move when the job moves further out than one intended.
When I bought my condo, i worked about 2 miles from it. within 2 years it was obvious that there wasn't much more job growth potential where I was, and if I wanted real wage increases, I would have to seek employment elsewhere. Pretty soon, I was commuting to Rockville, MD from Howard County, trading my 5 minute (with bad lights) commute to over 45 minutes (If I took the back roads--1 hr to 1 hr 15 minutes on 95 and the Beltway). And then my office there was moved to Rosslyn, VA after a reorganization. AFter about 5 years of those two commutes, I went to a different job (way less money, after a lay off) 10 mins. home, was there 2 years. Laid off again, another job again less money, but not too far from home, maybe 20. Another 2 years of that and again, if I wanted real wage increases I had to accept that I needed to work in DC. So I followed the money, and I've been commuting into the district since 1999.
There has NEVER been a time when selling my current home and moving closer to work would have been a wise decision. In the early days, it also would have meant moving my son to a worse school district (negating the point of buying here to begin with). And if I sold for full market value today, I'd not be able to buy anything even remotely comparable in DC and certainly not in a neighborhood where it would be safe for me to commute back and forth to work at night.
Where I live and the distance I drive is a choice. Like "choosing" to work instead of living in a box was my 'choice." Yeah, I choose to work for a living instead of living in a box. Some choice.
