I don't believe that I said anything about being able to do any of these things at the drop of a hat. If I had wanted to live in a small town, I would have made sure that I had the education and chosen a career path that did not require a long commute. That might require me to live somewhere else for a while or commute for a while. But the end goal would be not to commute. I think it requires some planning.

I think that most people have more choices than to commute or work at McDonald's. I believe that most people have more choices than to commute or live in a box.

"That might require me to live somewhere else for a while or commute for a while. But the end goal would be not to commute. I think it requires some planning."

Except that all of those people you are berating as "ridiculous" for paying $400 per month for gas may also be looking at an end goal that involves a shorter commute, but may be stuck for the moment with a commute. As you point out, you might also at some point be required by your job to commute for a while. In other words, no one can really just decide that they'll live and work in the same community at all times, even if that might be the end goal.

If you and your dh lost your jobs tomorrow, do you feel confident that you could replace them with others in the same community within a couple of months? If not, would you be willing to pick up and move to the next community for a job? What if you each got a job but in different communities? What if moving to the next community to be closer to the job(s) mean uprooting your child from a beloved school and good friends (I realize she's not that old yet, but that will start being an issue in a few years)?

I disagree. I think there is a certain class of people who have more choices than commute or work at MacDonald's (or the equivalent), but I don't think that describes most people by any means.

You could keep cable, and eat lower quality or less food.

I believe I said that paying $400/month for gas is ridiculous imo. Not that the people who pay that amount for gas are ridiculous. Even if I needed to spend that much in gas, I would still find it ridiculous.

I'm fairly sure we could replace our jobs within a few months. But even if we had to commute temporarily, eventually we would be able to find a job here again. Even if we had to move to another community, we would eventually move back here. For us, we are committed to living in this community, and chose professions that would easily allow us to do this.

Really? You honestly believe that the majority of people have no other choices than to work at McDonald's or have a long commute?

we evaluated the whole situation...dh deserved a much smoother commute than what he was tackling for the past two years.
