It works reasonably well in many European cities, though there is often some commute into the city from the outside or the fringes. The difference, though, is that longer commutes (e.g. from suburb to city) are often done using public transportation rather than cars.

Hey, I figured while everyone's exaggerating, why not me too?

If there were fewer people commuting from greater distances and more people used public transportation and/or carpooled, traffic wouldn't be so bad. If I were driving 45 miles or 8 miles and it took me 30+ minutes, I would be miserable.

in the state I live in that would require the public transportation actually you know...exist. It does not. There is no rail service, thre are buses in SOME cities but not to go from city to city -- sure it'd be swell to take public transportation every day, I'd do it in a heart beat. But it ain't here!

So, I would look into carpooling and/or starting a park and ride. My point is that I do not want to drive 30+ minutes everyday. I would look for alternatives whatever they might be in the area where I lived.

Fabulous for you...but don't be so quick to bandy about the take public transportation thing -- you can't take what ain't here.

I was in a hotel last week that had a TV in the mirror in the bathroom. Sounds right up your alley ;-).

I bring up public transportation, because even in places where it IS available, people don't use it and sometimes don't even realize it exists. Until I was 18, I had no idea that the city bus system in Morgantown was as good as it is. And it is pretty good if you live within city limits.

Morgantown is also unique, in that we have a pork project from the 70s-- the PRT. It's a monorail type train thing that connects downtown and the three campuses of the University. But even having this available, a lot of people who could use it do not use it. I work at library at one of the campuses, and there are meetings at the downtown campus library very frequently. Rather than taking the PRT (a 10 minute ride), most of the people attending the meetings drive (10-30 minute, closer to 30 with traffic and parking)-- adding to the traffic and parking problems Morgantown has.
