I wonder if everyone's definition of cable is the same.

I have basic (not standard) cable. I get 13 channels. While I like to watch a few TV shows, we got it because it made our internet less expensive. Literally less expensive. If we had just gotten internet, it would have been $50 or so per month for both. Cable subscribers get a special discount for the first few months, so we pay $45 or so per month for both. It's still up in the air whether we'll cancel it once the special offer runs out.

In any case, I would guess that most people would define cable as the TV access you purchase from the cable company . . .

Well we have many different packages from basic to Silver that includes most of the pay channels. They are all called "cable". Our tv company is called "Cablevision".

Yes, that's generally how cable companies work.

I have always thought the definition of cable was extra channels (HBO, SHO, etc.). That is what is was since I was a kid and now they break down the different services like that too. Basic Cable and Family Cable does not include any of those special channels.
