Here's how I balance it ...

I, as the parent, provide for the NEEDS of my minor children. That's my responsibility; not theirs.

Allowance (which means I am really paying for them, lol), birthday/christmas money, money they earn doing above-and-beyond jobs for us.

Now I give dd a decent allowance (I think, she doesn't), but when she was 5, 10 and even 12-13, her allowance was quite small, so I found that a bit tricky. I did not want to give a large allowance, because most of the time she did not need the money, but it also meant that she could not really pay herself (she gets no Christmas/Birthday money).

My children have never thought of "self-sufficiency" as looking out for #1. Rather, they have been raised to be useful members of society who are privileged to have everything they need and most things that they want, and that they have to "give back." From the time they were toddlers they have been involved in volunteer work; we have always required that a portion of their income go for church or charity, and we've modeled those values ourselves.

speaking of extras..one additional piece to the story that left me even more confused was that one of these kids got a tattoo.

I think this goes back to "you can't take care of others until you can take care of
