I've done it before, but I'm not really bragging.  Sometimes it's not a matter of being uber nice.  sometimes it's just quicker to pay for their groceries than wait for the order to be cancelled out.

I feel a bit bad in those instances when the benefactor gets emotional.  For one, I've been there before, too.  And for another, like I said, sometimes I'm just trying to get the hell out of the store and the extra $20 is worth it to me.  The first time I ever did it was a completely 'pay it forward'--back in the day someone helped me out that way.

Also, I've done it twice when someone else in line made really crappy (and loud) remarks about the shopper.  In those cases, it was a total F-U to the commenter.  and an attempt to show the shopper that not everyone in the world is a total dick.

Yes, I would.

Back in our "poor'  days a few times I had been on a grocery line and the person in front of me could not afford everything that they had selected and had to decide what items not to buy.  I was not in the situation to help them then.  I made the decision that now that I can help it it happened again that I would help.  But it has not come up.

Jamblessedthree, I think you are right.  Just like the internet can make the bad of people travel it can also make the good of people travel.  It is not an insolated incident, thankfully.

Dunno. I've never been faced with this situation. I'm pretty generous though so I'd like to think I would. I have bought a lot of lunches for grids when we wanted to spend time together and they were too broke to go out tot lunch.

Yes. Dh and I once paid for a woman's pumpkins because for some reason, her food stamp card wouldn't allow her to purchase them. I also paid for a man's prescriptions at Walgreen's once. I guess there's a $1 copay for Medicaid or something, and he was unaware of it. He only had enough change to pay for one of them. When he asked the pharmacist to sell him just one pill from each of the ones he couldn't afford, I gave him $5 so that he could get them all.

What part of "I paid for her pumpkins" made you think she paid for trout?
