My mother would faint out of sheer joy-- there's nothing she likes better than a good Catholic Supply store -- seriously -- she'd go in there and you'd never find her again...

Yes. We. Did.

My dd's First Communion was in May - about 125 kids were in the First Communion class this year.

To me "inconsiderate gifts and the controlling nature they may have" is a completely different topic than "monetary gifts for a purpose and potential control issues of the giver".

Unlike here where you can't even find a Catholic or Christian bookstore!

>>I think if it doesn't take into account the parents preferences, it does become controlling. <<

I think there is a half-way point here. Parents should have veto power over things that come into the home. Sometimes grandparents and other relatives get things that are not age-appropriate, or not appropriate for any age. I never tell my relatives WHAT to get for my kids, but I do tell them what NOT to get (for instance, they are only allowed "E" rated games for their game boys. If someone were to send an "M" rated game, it would be exchanged for something more suitable. Likewise, I have some issues with some of the clothing out there. No way is any little girl in my home going to wear a t-shirt that says, "It's All About Me" or the equivalent.

My mil always asks me what the kids need and I will say clothes and shoes as do most kids as they grow all the time. She has been asking for 9 years. Every birthday and Christmas (late every time, mind you-lol!), she will get them junky toys that some literally fall apart 20 minutes after they use them. Since I know she will not get them things that will be used for very long and basically junk, I will get the clothes and shoes and educational toys from my mom with her Christmas money. I just will not stress over it, it is not worth it!
Actually this year my dd got $10, late and my ds got a bunch of junk toys that fell apart. Even though $10 is not alot, I would have rather had her send that and if he wanted somethiing more expensive, we would have put more money into it so he would have it more than once or twice.
