First, in most churches, only a small percentage of the body actually tithes.

By the amount of money you had and knowing that there would not be anything else, yes, I would say in that situation to spend it all on the kids.
I don't understand. You buy the kids all the clothes they need and then your mother turns around and buys them more, so they have more than they need? Man, if I knew my mother was going to keep buying clothes for my kids no matter what, I think I would cut down on buying so many clothes and put the money I would have spent on clothes toward other things.
My mother used to pay for my kid's swim lessons or sports team participation as their birthday present every year. I didn't go out and buy more swim lessons or sign them up for another sport. I used the money I would have spent on swim lessons or signing up for baseball for other purposes.
