I'm not egd, and I can only answer for my own church, but....

First, in most churches, only a small percentage of the body actually tithes.

*Everyone* is *not* agreeing with her. I've seen at least three people who are rejoicing that their denomination doesn't require tithing and only encourages people to give to God after their own bills are paid, new furniture is paid off, and vacations are taken.

No, I never said ALL the time. If you have seen my other posts, I have said that when my dd has gotten money for things, she would save half and spend half.
By the amount of money you had and knowing that there would not be anything else, yes, I would say in that situation to spend it all on the kids.

Obviously you were not able to if you had to downsize your home.

I don't understand. You buy the kids all the clothes they need and then your mother turns around and buys them more, so they have more than they need? Man, if I knew my mother was going to keep buying clothes for my kids no matter what, I think I would cut down on buying so many clothes and put the money I would have spent on clothes toward other things.

My mother used to pay for my kid's swim lessons or sports team participation as their birthday present every year. I didn't go out and buy more swim lessons or sign them up for another sport. I used the money I would have spent on swim lessons or signing up for baseball for other purposes.

You are making assumptions of things you do not know 100% about.
