Yes, they probably would -- although our purchases tend to be experiences, rather than things.

We don't get Christmas bonuses.

Edited to add...although come to think of it, we really don't buy things we want "all through the year." I bought a few things this holiday season I wanted but didn't need -- hurricane globes, some new ornaments to replace a large number that were broken last year by our kitten, two new stocking holders and one new stocking. I think the last time before that either of us bought something we wanted but didn't need was a print we bought on vacation this year.

Let's start again...

>>Again, I am talking about a grandparent or someone who overrides a parent's known preference in purchasing a gift and then giving it to the child, knowing that the parent of the minor child doesn't approve, but doesn't care that the parent doesn't approve of the item <<

there's no way for you to know whehter the grandparent cares or not, though unless she tells you she doesn't......and if you're admitting to never experiencing this sort of arrangment, where are you getting the authority to plant a control call about it?

For someone who seems to have a pretty tight budget that doesn't allow much extra for saving, what's the difference in Ducky spending part of her $100 to help feed another family and you spending part of your Christmas bonus on tipping relative strangers at Christmastime?

I don't know why don't you ask Bill Gates that question? He donates alot of his salary but I am sure he does that AFTER he takes care of his family.
